We’re not sure, but we can speculate.
By now, you’ve most likely heard the recent news about OpenText’s acquisition of EMC Documentum. Many Documentum customers may be asking what this means for you? As of right now, there are few answers about Documentum’s fate. Historically, acquisitions of this type have not been kind to the smaller company. Often when a large company buys their direct competitor, they will scale back resources and leave the smaller solution unsupported. Eventually, this will force people off Documentum and on to another solution. But this process is easier said than done. Companies with such large user bases and complex ecosystems need time to make decisions and accommodate acquisitions into their company. This is something that usually happens over a year or several years. So, don’t feel like you need to make a decision right now about whether or not you leave Documentum, but do take some time to assess what your next steps may be.
There are a couple different ways that people may feel right now. Some might feel like they want to wait it out and see what happens over the next year or so, and that is perfectly okay. That can definitely be beneficial to those who have spent a lot of money on this particular solution. A disadvantage of waiting is that you may be forced into a decision made for you, once the companies have fully merged. The waiting game could force you into a co-existence strategy between your old system and the new one being provided. Others are probably feeling the need to jump ship and migrate their content to another ECM system. That is a reasonable reaction as well. The benefit to this is that you avoid the waiting game. You can actively seek solutions that better meet your current needs as well as finding a way to migrate your content before your system becomes obsolete. It can most certainly open the door to discovering a next gen ECM system. A disadvantage of jumping ship right away is that it can be sudden, costly and very disruptive, not to mention, you will have to spend the time to train employees how to use an entirely new system.
