Since we’re near the end of the year, I thought it might be useful to look back at what development has been up to this year. I’ve broken this down into the areas we typically think about internally.

Bridge the Content Divide: Dynamics and ECM
It is not uncommon for organizations to implement several different systems in which their employees must do their work like an ECM, or a CRM /ERP like Microsoft Dynamics. Based on a user’s role in the organization, they are going to use specific systems that are vital to getting their work done. For instance, a sales team probably does a majority of their work in a CRM, like Microsoft Dynamics. However, they are also likely to spend some of their time storing documents within a content management system, like NetDocuments. Whether you’re a law firm, financial institution, or government agency, your organization might want to integrate these different systems together to help improve business processes and workflow.

When we were designing Echo, one of the primary goals was to build a single product that would handle a wide variety of synchronization algorithms. Both from our own experience and talking to numerous customers, it was clear that use cases were pretty different even though they all involved moving data and keeping it in sync. So, instead of trying to invent a gigantic algorithm with hundreds of parameters and options, we decided to create many different, specialized Rulesets.
Don’t Let Unauthorized File Sharing Eclipse Information Governance Initiatives
We recently wrote a white paper about file sharing and the many problems unauthorized sharing can cause. In many cases, organizations struggle with unauthorized file sharing and don’t even know it. Usually, unauthorized sharing is caused by the use of personal file shares to access and store information. This behavior can be the result of a few things. Sometimes users just don’t want to work within their ECM or DMS. In other cases, they want the ability to work remotely, so they store their information in something like OneDrive or Google Drive. Finally, the cause can be that the organization has implemented too many systems, and users just want easy access to their content. Whatever the reason may be, you can’t let your users implement unauthorized ways to share content and eclipse your information governance initiatives.
